ask the internets

Internets,

I need to pay for one night in any place with private rooms (hotel, b&b, whatever) in Amsterdam in early November. Naturally, I’d like to pay as little as possible while still having a door to close and no cigarette smell in the bed. Any suggestions?

(LJ feed readers: I won’t see replies left directly on LJ. You know what to do.)

I really liked the Hotel Freeland, a gay-friendly B&B at Marnixstraat 386. I stayed there in March pretty much at random having surfed around the web looking for a place to stay. Convenient to the tram, with nice staff and pleasantly decorated rooms.

The only warnings I have are that the rooms are small and the stairs are typically Dutch (steep), but they let me keep my big suitcase downstairs in the reception area so I didn’t have to drag it up to my room.

Best of luck!

I don’t have any specific recommendations, but here’s a meta-suggestion: venere.com (new Italian travel site, or at least new to me) seems to be great for finding really cheap hotel rooms. They don’t charge you in advance, either. I just used it successfully to get a decent cheap room in New York, but they have much better coverage in Europe.
